Cleopatra’s Baths
Cleopatra’s Baths are among the most popular tourist attractions for both Egyptians and foreigners. They offer a glimpse into the place where Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt during the Pharaonic era, used to bathe. The baths are located 5 kilometers from the city center.
This site witnessed one of history’s most famous love stories between Cleopatra and Antony. The baths are characterized by their historical splendor. At first glance, the baths appear as a massive rock surrounded by water, seemingly lifeless and inanimate. However, nearby, a doorway adorned with Pharaonic inscriptions is visible. Water enters the large rock through openings and flows from one to another. Sunlight enters the water through other openings in the rock’s roof, warming it during bathing. Cleopatra and Antony would visit the baths whenever they came to Marsa Matrouh.
It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Siwa, and is also known as Ain Goba or Ain Shams. It is a stone bath filled with natural hot spring water, and some claim that it was named after the Egyptian queen who swam in it herself during her visit to Siwa.
