Aswan

Aswan is considered one of the most important cities in Nubia. In ancient Egyptian times, it was known as Swenet, meaning “market,” as it served as a trading center for caravans coming from Nubia. It was also known as the “Villa of Clear Gold” (100 Gates).
The construction of the Luxor Temple by Amenhotep III and Ramses II, dedicated to the worship of the god Amun-Ra, revealed Luxor and Aswan as cities of history and civilization in Egypt. Their influence extends deep into history, reflecting the greatness of the Egyptian people who elevated their knowledge and seven arts thousands of years ago. Aswan is a magnificent open-air museum of history, spanning various periods from prehistory to the modern era. Aswan offers diverse tourist attractions, contributing to its natural beauty and commercial appeal. It is considered a living museum due to the many influential factors shaping its landscape, making it one of the most beautiful tourist destinations.
Aswan is located in the far south of Egypt. Its name is derived from the ancient Egyptian word “Sun,” meaning market or trade, due to its strategic location controlling trade between Upper and Lower Egypt.
Aswan was part of the first nome (province) of Upper Egypt, and its main patron deities were Khnum at Elephantine and Isis. Aswan’s therapeutic tourism is renowned for its unique approach to treating various ailments, most notably rheumatism, which was traditionally cured using methods such as burying the patient in hot desert sand.
Extensive research by international experts has explored the use of Aswan’s atmosphere for treating chronic diseases. The area is characterized by high levels of ultraviolet radiation and low humidity, reaching only 43.4% between December and March. The year-round sunshine and dry climate create an ideal environment for addressing issues such as rheumatism, asthma, and chronic inflammation. Aswan currently has two centers for skull sand therapy, and there are proposals to establish a tourist village in the area, featuring specialized centers for natural therapy and sanatoriums for patients with rheumatism and acute skin diseases.
